From the end of April to mid-May 2024, the Rio Grande do Sul area received rainfall three times higher than the usual year-to-date average. As a result, deadly, historic floods devastated the area, affecting 2.4 million people and causing billions of dollars in damages.

Below are some first-hand stories from individuals who received grants.
"I live in Porto Alegre, a state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the last few weeks, we have suffered the worst climate event in our history - a huge flood that affected 80% of the state. In my case, I went more than 18 days without power and 12 days without water in my house.
We had a lot of extra expenses during this time, as we needed to buy a small power generator for our home to fill batteries and keep the refrigerator on. We also have had additional expenses with gas for the power generator, water, and food as we cannot cook at house. The grant made a difference in helping with our many extra expenses. Thanks for all the help!"

"Here in Brazil, my city suffered from a historic flood. Water from Lake Guaíba rose more than 5 meters, 2.5 meters inside the city. It impacted my life tremendously. I had to leave my house because it was completely flooded. I ran out of clothes to wear and sheltered at a friend's house for 21 days. I needed to buy clothes and support myself during the flooding period. When I found out about the possibility of getting help through this grant, it was such a relief that I had a huge smile even after going through such difficult days. Thank you!"
